The Story of Rob Donn Mackay of Strathnaver
George Gunn
George Gunn tells a story about renowned Gaelic bard and drover Rob Donn MacAoidh or brown-haired Rob Mackay from Strathnaver, Sutherland (1714 – 1778). Rob Donn could not read or write in his native tongue and could not speak a word of English, and yet has more poems and songs in Gaelic than any other bard, living or dead. He might arguably be as important to poetry in the Gaelic language as Robert Burns is to poetry in Scots.
