Cruel Lairds

A laird (Scots) is the owner of an estate. They would oversee the families and workers who lived and worked on their land, asking money for rent from what little the tenants had. Perhaps unsurprisingly, lairds in folktales are often portrayed as cruel, wicked or unkind.
