Sheila Stewart
Blairgowrie
Sheila Stewart MBE (1937 – 2014) was a singer, storyteller, and author – the last in a long line of a rich oral tradition of the Travelling community. Born in 1937 in a stable that belonged to a hotel in Blairgowrie, Sheila grew up in a family of Travellers whose roots in Scotland have been traced back to the eleventh century and whose music and song gained world-wide renown during the folk music revival. Sheila inherited a large number of traditional songs and stories from older family members, including her mother Belle Stewart and her father, Alec, who was a piper and storyteller. Her family became known as the ‘Stewarts of Blair’ and were considered one of the most talented folk families in Europe.
